The Story of your Chicken
Poultry are a necessity to add nutrients back to the depleted soil on this former cotton and tobacco farm. This year we piloted turkeys (a small flock) and chickens--and we were very pleased with the results. We sourced the meat bird chicken (a Cornish Cross) you are enjoying from Moyer's Poultry in Pennsylvania, and they arrived to us on Sept. 5, ready and roaring to go.
We stewarded them in a large brooder with lots of ventilation, with access to heat lamps (except during those crazy 90 degree days back in October), and when they were large enough not to pass through our electric poultry netting, we opened the doors and let them day range. At this time, we also split them into two overnight shelters. We put them up at night both for warmth and added protection.
A week or so later, we then began to move them through pasture.
During the day, they enjoyed lounging in the sun, pecking around the fallen leaves, and scratching through mulch and grass.
They had access to clean water always and we continuously added fresh mulch and leaves to their overnight pens, then, moved the pens and fencing to fresh areas.
You are enjoying a well cared for bird.
